As mobile phone brands around the world have successively unveiled their foldable phone plans, the foldable phone market has gained growing traction. Chinese display giant BOE is one of the few enterprises in the world that are capable of mass-producing flexible and foldable displays. In 2020, its shipments of flexible and foldable OLED displays approached one million. According to data from Sigmaintell, BOE accounted for about 20% of global shipments of flexible and foldable displays for mobile phones in 2020, ranking first in China and second in the world.

As a global display leader and an innovative IoT company, BOE has become the first in China to mass-produce flexible and foldable OLED displays and bring them to market. It has rolled out a wide range of world-leading flexible in-folding and out-folding products. Most notably, it debuted the world’s first flexible display that can fold up to 360 degrees and the in-folding display with a fold radius of only 1 mm, the smallest up to now. These products have won high recognition from top brands.

While serving the existing customers of flexible and foldable displays, BOE has actively sought to win over new customers and developed new forms of mass-producible products such as bendable display. In 2020, it launched the scroll-like display technology in coordination with leading smartphone maker OPPO and is on track to unveil the next-generation scroll-like display with thinner modules and a smaller bend radius to make phones thinner. In addition, BOE’s industry-leading 400 PPI under-display camera technology brings the screen-to-body ratio to nearly 100%, presenting even more delicate images while addressing the jagged edges of camera holes to deliver more fabulous display effects. These technologies are expected to appear in future smartphones, opening up new space for innovation in flexible products.

Thanks to its world-leading technology and market applications, BOE’s flexible and foldable OLED displays have gained great acclaim in the industry. The company’s project on the “R&D and industrialization of high-resolution flexible and bendable AMOLED display technology for mobile applications” won a special prize of the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Progress Award, and its flexible OLED full-screen display technology won the 2020 IFA “Innovative Display Technology Gold Award.” A cohort of well-known phone brands including Honor, OPPO, Motorola, LG and Nubia have opted for BOE’s flexible displays for their phone lineups released in the last two years.

In response to the growing market demand for foldable and bendable display products, BOE has continued to expand the application scenarios of flexible displays and brought them to a wide variety of fields such as foldable laptops, smart wearables, transparent A-pillar for smart cabin, as well as in-car display and flexible taillight. Its shipments of flexible and foldable displays are growing rapidly, greatly enhancing China’s global competitiveness in the field of flexible OLED.
